Oops, I did it again!

Daily Prompt: Careless Whisper.  Tell us about a time you or someone you know said something that they immediately regretted.

I’m not the type to blurt out stupid, careless, hurtful words.  Normally, I have two feet planted steadfastly on the ground and have my head stuck on.  But that day was not a normal day.

I was the newest and youngest team member.  The other three ladies were at least in their forties, but they have been working together for many years.  When all official business had been discussed, we were chit chatting about life.  Somehow we got on to women’s health issues.

To be specific, the topic was menopause.  What does a 31 year old know about menopause?  I have no reason to assume that all of the ladies in the group had experienced menopause first hand but I did.  I even went so far as to ask, “What was menopause like for you?”

The question in and of itself is a good one.  The trouble was, it assumed that she not only had experienced menopause but that she had successfully maneuvered it.  That meant that I guessed her age to be in the late forties at the earliest.  D’uh!

imagesNeedless to say, she stated in no uncertain terms that she had not even started!  And, of course, I tried to back paddle, but I was guilty.  My question was so good it was my undoing.  I had to apologize, and admitted that it was a stupid question.

We were all embarrassed and the group quickly disbanded on the pretext that we all had work to do after the longish meeting.  So, what did I learn that day when I assume things?  Just as they say, “I made an ass out of u & me!”  Have you heard that before?
